Rachel Cunningham, a former Army Reserve nurse began helping by sending one care package to an Army Friend Serving in Afghanistan. Paul Marshall, a retired Naval Officer and Vietnam War Veteran decided a long time ago that he would devote himself to helping other servicemen and veterans in any way he could. Together, they started the non-profit organization, Cypress Cares for Our Troops.
Cypress Cares for Our Troops has shipped several thousand care packages to troops overseas in any remote, harsh and unfriendly area. The cost for each care package is $13 to $15 and with around 2,000 care packages to send out regularly, costs can run up to $30,000.
To help offset this cost, Cypress Cares held an annual golf tournament on Sunday, May 15th at the Longwood Golf Course in Cypress.

Volunteer opportunities are abundant this holiday season for residents of Northwest Harris County thanks to Volunteer Houston.
- Volunteers are needed to make greeting cards that will be delivered to nursing homes and hospitals on Christmas Day. Cards can be made at home and delivered to one of two area locations.
- A pet supply store in Copperfield is in need of volunteers to help staff a pet adoption station every Saturday from 11 am to 4 pm for a local animal welfare agency. Duties will include walking dogs, cleaning cages, grooming and showing off the dogs. Volunteer opportunities are available for those ages 15 years and up (volunteers ages 15 to 17 must be accompanied by a parent).
- Volunteer opportunities are also available with agencies that work directly with the courts. Volunteers will be needed to research placements for children who have been removed from their homes. Some participants will be used to review foster care cases and make recommendations for permanent placement while others will work directly with families in which abuse has occurred. Those interested can call to register for an upcoming orientation session.
- Volunteers are also needed at an Alzheimer facility in spring to help lead a group of senior citizens in their chair-based exercise sessions. Staff will train all volunteers.

Everyone is welcome to donate funds or books (only books geared towards middle school and high school teens are being accepted). Books being donated may be new or gently used and can be dropped off any time the library is open during the month of October.
Donated books can be brought to 9191 Barker Cypress Road. All books need to be placed in the collection bins located in front of LSC Cy-Fair Friends of the Library bookstore or brought to the customer service desk where a librarian will accept donations. Don’t forget to attach a note to your bin donations indicating that book(s) is for Elise Sheppard and the Texas Children's Hospital Book Drive!
