Join the Houston Rockets as they host Dribble-A-Thon, a fundraiser for Cy-Fair Independent School District Libraries on Saturday, February 18, at the Berry Center from 12:30 pm to 3:00 pm.

The Dribble-A-Thon will feature hundreds of area students, be they basketball fans, or newcomers to the sport, as they fill the court of the Berry Center and participate in various games for a great cause. All proceeds raised will go directly to Cy-Fair ISD school libraries.


Residents of Town Lake have one more reason to brag on the “good thinks” of their students!

Middle School students at Cy-Fair’s Smith took high honors in the problem solving competition at the Technology Student Association (TSA) National Conference at the Gaylord Texan Resort in Grapevine, Texas, held over the summer.

Students Kyle Thomas and Mike Lynn placed 11th among more than 90 teams who competed in the problem solving portion of the TSA National Conference. Both students had previously qualified at the state level in the problem solving category, which allowed them the opportunity to advance to the nationals.


Students and Parents Taste-Test CFISD School Food

Cypress Fairbanks Independent School District recently held their annual school menu Food Tasting Fair 2011 and nearly 300 students, staff and community members came out to test almost 50 potential dishes.

General Mills, PepsiCo and Kellogg’s, along with eleven other local food brokers also had representatives at the event.

Cy-Fair ISD has been holding school food tastings for more than fifteen years. This year’s event featured potential breakfast, lunch and gluten-free entrées as well as snack foods.


Every year, thousands of students across the nation study hard to compete in their school’s spelling bee and each year hundreds of students win. This year Cypress-Fairbanks Independent School District held their district-wide elementary spelling bee at the Berry Center.

Students from many elementary schools across the district, including Rennell, competed in Cypress-Fairbanks ISD's district spelling bee competition.

Metcalf Elementary school fifth grade student Khloe O’Gilvie won first place by correctly spelling the word “amenity” in the eighth round of the competition and Black Elementary school fifth grade student Taylor Artis won as the district runner up. Both O’Gilvie and Artis will compete in the Houston PBS Regional Spelling Bee that is scheduled for March 26, 2011 at the University of Houston.


All State Music Students Honored by TMEA

The Texas Music Educators Association (TMEA) All State Organization has selected forty-two students from the Cypress-Fairbanks Independent School District. To achieve this All State status, students begin auditioning in November with thousands of music students across the state. 

The students are chosen to participate in All Region, All Area and All State band, choir and orchestra and less than 1 percent of the students who enter will achieve one of these awards. These are among the highest accomplishments a music student can achieve.

The students chosen will be participating in the TMEA 2011 Clinic and Convention. It will be held from February 9 through 12 at the Henry B. Gonzalez Convention Center in San Antonio, Texas, and is the largest music educator convention in the United States.


Technology Festival Coming to Cypress

The Second Annual Cypress-Fairbanks Independent School District Technology Festival is coming to town. It will be held at the Berry Center located at 8877 Barker Cypress Road on Thursday January 27 from 6:00 to 7:30 pm.

The Technology Festival is a district-wide celebration that showcases students' technology projects and is open to all Cypress-Fairbanks ISD students.

Projects will be spotlighted in the categories of graphic arts, robotics, programming, multimedia and web pages/web 2.0.


Journalism Award Given to Cy-Fair ISD Students

Cypress Creek High School journalism students were recently awarded national and statewide honors for the work they have accomplished on the Cougar Connection newspaper and Cougar Pride yearbook.

The Columbia Scholastic Press Association (CSPA) Gold Medal award was given to journalism advisor Jennifer Sansbury and her fellow Cougar Connection classmates. Each publication entered in the annual critique received a placing based on a total numerical score. A cumulative score of 973 out of 1000 was given to the Cougar Connection giving them more than the minimum 800 score needed for the CSPA Gold Medal honor. 

Cypress Creek newspaper and yearbook staff received their first place journalism award at the Central Texas Journalism Invitational UIL meet that occurred in December. They received 13 out of 40 possible top spots!


Scholastic Arts Awards Cy-Fair Honor Students

The 12 Gold Key and 22 Silver Key Awards winners from the Cy-Fair Independent School District have been announced in the Regional Scholastic Art Awards.

Over 165,000 students submitted work to the Scholastic Art and Writing Awards for review by professional artists, educators and creative industry leaders. Nearly 50,000 students earned regional awards and 1,000 students earned national awards.

The Gold Key award winners will be featured in an exhibit at the Art League of Houston located at 1953 Montrose Blvd from January 14 through February 9, 2011. The exhibits can be viewed from 9 am to 5 pm Monday through Friday, and 11 am to 5 pm on Saturdays. On February 14 the Gold Key Art Reception will be held from 6:30 to 8:30 pm at the Harris County Department of Education, 6300 Irvington Blvd.


Two Cy-Fair head coaches and two Cy-Fair Independent School District athletes have been chosen as finalists for the Touchdown Club of Houston’s Coach of the Year and Player of the Year.

David Jones, Cypress Woods High School head coach and Ed Pustejovsky, Cy-Fair High School head coach were both selected as finalist for the 2010 Coach of the Year, among 10 coaches from across the Houston area.

Collin Callahan, Cypress Ridge High Schools senior linebacker, was chosen as a finalist for the 2010 Defensive Player of the Year and Chuckie Keeton, Cypress Creek High Schools senior quarterback, was chosen as a finalist for the 2010 Offensive Player of the Year.


North Cypress Sports Medicine will be sponsoring the Cypress Hoops Invitational to benefit the Cy-Fair Educational Foundation’s “Dollars for Scholars” program. Twenty-four teams from Cy-Fair Independent School District and many other schools across the greater Houston area will play in the men’s tournament. The tournament will take place from Thursday, December 9 through Saturday, December 11.

The Cy-Fair Educational Foundation provides scholarship funds for students seeking higher education beyond high school and also funds institutional grant money for classrooms. “Dollars for Scholars” is a program that helps fund current programs within Cy-Fair ISD and improves the quality of education.

All of the games will be held at the Berry Center, Cy-Ranch High School and Cy-Woods High School. Tickets are $20 for a 3-day tournament pass, $10 for a 1-day pass, $5 for an adult single game ticket, and $3 for a student single game ticket. Tickets can be purchased at the Berry Center during normal business hours.
