Every year, thousands of students across the nation study hard to compete in their school’s spelling bee and each year hundreds of students win. This year Cypress-Fairbanks Independent School District held their district-wide elementary spelling bee at the Berry Center.

Students from many elementary schools across the district, including Rennell, competed in Cypress-Fairbanks ISD's district spelling bee competition.

Metcalf Elementary school fifth grade student Khloe O’Gilvie won first place by correctly spelling the word “amenity” in the eighth round of the competition and Black Elementary school fifth grade student Taylor Artis won as the district runner up. Both O’Gilvie and Artis will compete in the Houston PBS Regional Spelling Bee that is scheduled for March 26, 2011 at the University of Houston.

The Cy-Fair Educational Foundation provides scholarship funds for students seeking higher education beyond high school and also funds institutional grant money for classrooms. “Dollars for Scholars” is a program that helps fund current programs within Cy-Fair ISD and improves the quality of education.

All of the games will be held at the Berry Center, Cy-Ranch High School and Cy-Woods High School. Tickets are $20 for a 3-day tournament pass, $10 for a 1-day pass, $5 for an adult single game ticket, and $3 for a student single game ticket. Tickets can be purchased at the Berry Center during normal business hours.

The classic play “The Music Man” is coming to The Berry Center this July, providing a great experience for the whole family.  Based on the story of a fast talking salesman who ends up talking himself into the position of producing a musical - but he has no musical talent or experience!  It’s a great story of someone finding character, overcoming challenges, making new friends, and finding love, all where he never would have expected.

The play will be held at The Berry Center Theater, 8877 Barker Cypress Rd, over the weekends of July 16 and July 23, and show time information and tickets can be found at TicketTurtle.com.
