Cy-Fair Schools Maintain AYP Status

Under the No Child Left Behind Act, all public school campuses, districts, and the state are evaluated for "Adequate Yearly Progress" or "AYP". For 2009, all 69 Cypress-Fairbanks campuses were gauged and given "Met Adequate Yearly Progress" status by the Texas Education Agency on December 15th.

To meet eligibility for AYP, districts needed to exhibit 67 percent performance and 95 percent participation in TAKS Reading/English Language Arts; 58 percent performance and 95 percent participation in TAKS Mathematics; and a 70 percent graduation rate/90 percent attendance rate.

Towne Lake is proud to note that Cy-Fair I.S.D. scored 97 percent in English/Language Arts performance with 99 percent in participation and 92 percent in Math performance with 100 percent participation. Cy-Fair's graduation rate for the Class of 2008 was 86.4 percent.

Dr. Rayyan Amine, Senior Director of Campus Improvement and Research's response:

"We are very proud that 100 percent of our campuses met AYP for 2009 even though the standards from 2008 to 2009 increased 7 percent in Reading and 8 percent in Math. Our goal for 2010 is to sustain significant achievement as standards continue to rise by 6 percent in reading and 9 percent in math."

Towne Lake children can look forward to challenging curricula in an adaptive and dynamic school district for years to come!

Cy-Fair I.S.D. Celebrates Computer Science

Towne Lake is proud to send its students to Cy-Fair I.S.D. schools, as the district is award-winning and dedicated to continuing education with innovative curricula. This week (December 6-12) marks National Computer Science Education Week by the U.S. House of Representatives.

The first full week in December was chosen to honor computer science education in honor of Grace Murray Hopper, a pioneer in the field who was born on December 9, 1906. Hopper engineered new programming languages and pioneered standards for computer systems, which laid the foundation for several advances in computer science from the late 1940s through the 1970s.

Denise Kubecka, CFISD's coordinator for secondary technology applications noted, "Computing is something that touches everyone’s life on a daily basis. As a result, more and more jobs have a connection to computer science. Being exposed to computer science education allows students to engage in critical and computational thinking—both which are necessary for success in any field in this digital age."

This week, the coordinator is asking CFISD's computer science educators to expose the rigorous features and activities of the district's computer science program, including a robotics contest that will take be taking place this weekend. In addition, this past November the district hosted a FIRST LEGO League qualifying tournament at Cypress Springs High School.

Technology is indeed what will continue to make the world go round in coming years, and it is a pleasure to witness Cy-Fair's children laying the technological foundations of the future through their learning experience.

In honor of Mrs. Jackson, Towne Lake has donated and planted a live oak tree in the Postma Elementary playground.

Mrs. Jackson has dedicated her career to education, having served Cy-Fair ISD for 26 years, Spring Branch ISD for 6 years, and a private school for 2 years. Two years ago, she was honored by being named principal of the new Postma Elementary.

Though she may be retiring from education, she doesn’t plan to stop. Mrs. Jackson and her husband of 42 years plan to continue giving back to the community by volunteering in Cy-Fair and in her home school district. Her major retirement plans center around the the three “g’s” – golf, grandchildren and GOING places. Her first trip will be with her oldest son’s family as the 6 of them venture to Geilenkirchen Germany to visit her youngest son and his family. Mrs. Jackson will also be caring for her dad who is 95 years old.

Principal Jackson will be missed by all of her students, faculty, and parents at Postma. Thanks to Towne Lake, they will be reminded of her grace and guidance every time they see the beautiful live oak.
