Cypress Fairbanks Independent School District recently held their annual school menu Food Tasting Fair 2011 and nearly 300 students, staff and community members came out to test almost 50 potential dishes.
General Mills, PepsiCo and Kellogg’s, along with eleven other local food brokers also had representatives at the event.
Cy-Fair ISD has been holding school food tastings for more than fifteen years. This year’s event featured potential breakfast, lunch and gluten-free entrées as well as snack foods.
Cy-Fair’s food services department is funded by the USDA, which requires schools to have no more than 30 percent of their offerings' calories come from fat and no more than 10 percent of their calories coming from saturated fat. There must be NO trans fats and sodium must be at a “minimum”.
The CFISD cafeteria department provides meals for 106,000 students and serves approximately 85,000 lunches and 30,000 breakfasts every day.
